I've been thinking about doing a fanzine.
My youngest, Gus is about to be two years old and I'm getting a little more free time lately.
Here's what I've been thinking-
I want to do it through a self publishing service like Lulu. They print on demand on both sides of the Atlantic so that wouldn't be a problem, and they sell through Amazon which most people already have an account with so you don't have to screw around with Pay Pal or anything like that.
I'm very attached to the name "Bouffant", but I can be persuaded by a great idea.
I'm imagining black and white printing with a color cover.
I would like it to be very handmade looking with lots of art. None of the slick layouts you see around. I think for a fanzine to be worthwhile it needs to be an objet d'art that justifies being printed.
About the concept- I'm not quite sure. I was thinking about making it a "Pertwee lifestyle magazine" articles about choosing capes and pinkie rings making a comeback, but that's a little limiting.
I want Recipe Book humor stuff, but still accessible to a regular fan. Jokes not in-jokes.
I want to talk about Doctor Who but not have it be outdated in a month. No speculation and not just about the latest series.
I want to riff on old annuals a little but not too much, that's been so well done by others.
I want it to be big like an annual, not like a little monthly fanzine, with lots of room for art.
I want it to be a little of all of this, but not to feel random. All tied together by an aesthetic.
So, that's my mission statement, I guess.
Does anyone want to pitch some ideas?
