The Doctor is in the Brigadier’s office arguing about politics when a call comes in from Geneva – a meteorite is about to land near London. Its orbit has been suspiciously erratic. The Doctor rushes off in Bessie using the hyperdrive (Jo does not join him as she is attending a pop concert with Mike Yates).
The meteorite has landed in a field. The Dr approaches. It pulses strangely. When the UNIT jeeps arrive the Doctor tosses it playfully to Osgood, saying “take good care of that my good man – it may be the scientific miracle of the century”.
As they drive off, strangely glowing eyes watch them from a nearby bush.....
*
In the Doctor’s lab, Osgood places the meteorite under a microscope... the pulses become stronger. Osgood himself glows with a strange eerie green glow and speaks in a booming voice, “The time is at hand! Zarrok shall return!” The Dr slaps him but Osgood now has the strength of ten men. “Just as I thought! That meteorite is a container for pure living energy!” A fight ensues but not even the sudden intervention of the Brigadier and Benton, with their guns, can stop Osgood from fleeing across the car park. The DR is philosophical: “It’s no good Brigadier, even an atomic bomb wouldn’t stop him now. He’s under the control of some alien influence. I have the feeling if this ‘Zarrok’ returns, it will mean the end of your species. Rather ironic isn’t it?”
*
Osgood is hiding in a cave when a man with strange glowing eyes approaches him: “Zarrok! We have awaited your return for seven centuries! Now we shall attack the Earth creatures and absorb their entire planet’s energy!” (booming voice treated in post-production)

The Doctor makes special adaptations to Bessy so that her headlights can see in the dark using infra-red and an electron-radar. The car travels in complete silence (no engine noise). As Osgood appears, Bessy becomes invisible! The Dr leaps out wearing his Invisibility Cloak. “Sorry to resort to dirty tricks my good man but you cannot be allowed to win, you know.”
The fight scene is invisible (Osgood hurtling around as the invisible Dr uses unknown Venusian akido).
Osgood’s companion appears and uses a ray that makes the DR visible. As Osgood is about to unleash the final burst of energy
(“Don’t do it man! It will split the entire planet open like a rotten egg!”) JO GRANT suddenly appears and stuns him using an experimental ray gun. Dr: “But Jo where did you spring from?” Jo: “
You didn;t think I’d miss all the fun did you? I hid in Bessie under the spare invisibility cloak!” Dr: “Now really JO, that was most irresponsible of you. Anything could have happened. Do you know how many young people die every year by fooling around getting themselves locked in the trunks of cars?” Jo: “I’m sorry Dr.”
The DR ponders ruefully the fate of Osgood/Zarrok. All that remains is a tiny ember that glows... glows... then finally fades out.
Dr: “You might say he’s finally run out of energy.”
Jo laughs. She tells the Doctor all about the pop concert as they drive off in Bessy.
THE END.
Points of interest:
HAVOC can choreograph the fight scenes between the DR and Zarrok
Invisible Bessy to be realised through clever trick photography
Stock footage of contemporary pop musician during a cutaway to Jo enjoying the pop concert (possibly Alvin Stardust).
Osgood can be recast from ‘The Daemons’ if the actor is unavailable, however he must be shorter than Jon Pertwee.
