Patrick Ness's Young Adult Doctor Who spin off is supposed to be coming out very soon. So far they haven't released a trailer, which could be a bad sign or not. They did release a picture of "Miss Quill" holding a laser gun. Miss Quill sounds pretty Harry Potter to me. They also released a tweet that said "Fear is coming, tragedy is coming, war is coming. Prepare yourselves, #Class is coming… " It sounds like it taking itself very seriously. I feel like all the elements are in place for this to be unintentionally hilarious, of course I don't know. The serious tone, the righteous inclusive credo, teens, sex, monsters and violence. It seems like it could go really wrong. Ness's tireless defense of YA is funny. He really believes it's just literature that happens to be about young people. -Of course there are a lot of stories about young people that aren't YA. Lord of the Flies isn't YA. The difference is that YA deals with wanting to fit in and have a boyfriend and wanting respect from your elders, and stuff that's important to teens in real life. It seems like a blind spot with him. Treasure Island is not YA but Twilight is, and he doesn't seem to understand the difference. He just writes about that stuff because that's what he finds compelling. So that could be another reason to suspect unintentional hilarity, or not, maybe he's just passionate in his chosen mode of writing. What do you think.
