And now, the first installment in a new ongoing series of adventures for Doctor Who and his assistant Penny.
Vworp vworp.
Penny awoke from sleep, drowsy. She looked at the clock at her bedside – 4 a.m. The wheezing and groaning of the wind had grown very irritating, and she covered her head with her pillow. It had seemed to stop, for whatever reason.
But there was a light shining into her bedroom, from outside. It was a blue-white shine, possibly from the moon. This was new, Penny observed, but still just a minor inconvenience. She lived her life out of the way, all the way up here- it’s only fair that some signs of life would happen to barge in.
A creaking door. That – well, that’s not okay. She rose with a start, and reached under the bed, grabbing her spade. She heard the faint rumblings of footsteps, and hid behind the door. She felt a prescence on the other side of the door, as suddenly there was a faint rapping on the wood. Four knocks.
“Helloooo-“ the man knocking on the door began, unprepared for the assault he would face. Penn clocked him right in the jaw with the spade, as he staggered backwards, falling over.
“Who the hell are you?” The man, on the floor, caressed his jaw, making sure it was still in one piece. She held the weapon to his neck, giving him a light kick for a response.
“My name is the Doctor.” The man wore cheap clothes – a hoodie entirely unsuitable for this chilly clime, with a starfield pattern on his jumper underneath. “I’m just here to see what’s happening – I don’t mean no harm.”
“My ship – it usually doesn’t land so early. I don’t usually make a habit of bursting into houses when all the mice are sleeping.” He rose onto his knees. “I don’t know why I’ve been brought here. I was just performing some routine repairs, when suddenly, the controls went all whoopsy-daisy, and wouldn’t you know it, here I am. Oh, and incidentally, where is here?”
“The Himalayas.” Penny did not waver in her stance, “You’re near the mountaintop, now. There’s no way you wouldn’t know that.”
“I, well, it’s funny, when I last-“ he began to dive into some ridiculous explanation that really didn’t answer her question, but at the least paid lip service to how amazing and brilliant this man thinks he is. A thought then crossed Penny’s mind – something her mother talked of, long ago. This strange man from a strange land, a puff of white hair on a slender frame. While this man did not match the description of suave above all else as she had been told, she did immediately see the single, unmistakable trademark quality that puts him apart from everyone else. “And that’s when the reactor should stabilize.”
“Doctor Who?”
“Yes? Er- I’m sorry? We don’t usually get to that part until – well, four lines ago.”
“No, you are Doctor Who?”
She lowered the weapon, and reached her hand out to raise him to her level.
“I’m Penelope Montera. Penny.” Penny looked at her suitcase – already packed. It was her turn.
