Welcome traveller.
Let’s Doolittle.
Ingredients:
I totally winged the quantities for this and so this is my revised list to serve three people.
6 chipolatas
1 large onion
1 banana
splash of milk
tomato relish
3 sub rolls
Cut the onions into crescents and fry. Cook the chipolatas. If you’re making lots it would be easier to control in separate pans. But this is a quick and dirty lunch for one so I’m chucking it all together. Singed onions are a sign of authenticity. And there’s extra sausages for later.
While they cook make the banana puree. Cut up the banana and add a splash of milk - very little required. Add as you need. Mush it up with a fork until it’s mixed well. A few minor lumps gives some texture. The puree is a bit like baby food. That’s okay, I can pretend I’m Robocop (the proper one).
Once that’s all done layer it up. Chipolatas, fried onions, relish, puree.
I got a bit excited and stuffed it with three chipolatas and lots of everything. Gives it that Man vs Food feel. And my eyes have have always been bigger than my belly. Make no mistake, if you go fully loaded like this it is messy eating.
VERDICT: I cannot tell a lie. That was good. I originally considered using a banana chutney but in the end that felt like trying to hide the banana flavour. And with this puree there is no hiding it. It’s a powerful taste and vies for position on your tastebuds. I say roll with it. It’s alright and blends pretty well. Sweet fruity edge to all that grease and the more vinegary/sweet relish.
I want to see the Doolittle Dog placed alongside other fast food favourites. Every hotdog vendor should have it in their canon. Served on street corners to powerful people on the go. ”Do a lot with a Doolittle.” Says BBC TVs Doctor Who Jodie Whittaker before clamping her chops around a triple chippo fully loaded special. There could even be the McDoolittle Dog. There’s no stopping it.
