A Glam rock / Recipe book / Blake's 7 crossover tale.
'Alvin gains great powers'.
The black PVC jumpsuit creaked as the man lowered himself onto the faded chair directly in front of the cracked and grimy dressing room mirror. He peered at his reflection in the light of the few surrounding bulbs which were still unbroken, smoothing back his impressively slick black bouffant. Alvin, for it was he, picked up his bottle of Hi Karate aftershave from the dressing room table and splashed a little of the dregs onto his impressive sideburns. He listened to the faint sound of the warm up act reverberating through the walls, starting their final number. Tonight would be a good gig, he decided. Mrs Mills always went down a storm, and the audience would be nicely warmed up by the time he appeared onstage. He observed his reflection once more. There was still something missing, he decided. One final addition to the costume was needed, he thought, to complete his trendy new look, but what? Ever since he had joined the secret crime fighting elite of Sexy Voord he had been perfecting his new persona, even changing his name from Shane Fenton to the more heroic sounding 'Alvin Stardust'. Now the transformation was almost complete.
His attention suddenly turned to a small electronic device on the table next to his aftershave. A souvenir of a previous adventure, the Voord had called it a 'Gravitronic Anomaly Attractor'. It had belonged to an evil space salvage pirate, who they had defeated, its purpose to draw lost, hopefully valuable items back out of subspace. Alvin had kept it to remind himself of the adventure and had presumed it broken, but now he noticed a light pulsing on its side and a faint humming noise which appeared to be coming from all around the room. He leapt to his feet as the sound intensified, the remaining lightbulbs in the room dimming and flickering erratically as the device seemed to sap energy from the very atmosphere itself. A darker patch appeared above the buffet table in the centre of the room, near the ceiling, a strange nothingness which was impossible for him to focus on. From out of the swirling void there came a cry - and suddenly a body fell with a resounding crash onto the remains of the stale buffet, sending fragments of tripe casserole and tattie oggie shooting off into the air. Then there was silence.
Alvin watched dumfounded as the figure groaned and staggered to his feet, dusting crumbs of Gugelhuff from his leather outfit with a black gloved hand. The man looked up with a suspicious sneer. Alvin could see that half his face was covered in a shiny black mask, as if hiding the result of some terrible injury. The one visible eye regarded Alvin with disdain. "Hey you, where is this place? Is this Star One?", he shouted. "In the name of the Federation, I demand you tell me where to find Blake!" The man raised his arm and pointed his clenched, black-clad fist at Alvin. He glanced at the strange ring on the man's hand, noticing what appeared to be a series of small glowing lenses attached to it. Some sixth sense alerted Alvin to impending danger and he instinctively leapt to one side, just as a jagged beam of energy shot out from the ring, searing the air with a tremendous roar.
Alvin could smell the acrid stench of burning pvc as his trailing cape took the brunt of the blast. The beam carried on and hit the dressing room mirror, rebounding back the way it had come, bathing the man in an eerie glow. He screamed, his body surrounded by a crackling green corona started to dissolve and vanish. Only the outstretched hand now remained, finally falling to the floor with a soft thump. Alvin crouched down and removed the glove and ring from the still smouldering cybernetic appendage. He thought for a moment before pulling the glove onto his own hand and slipping on the ring. He looked at his reflection in the remains of the mirror and raised his arm slowly. Yes, this was exactly what he had been looking for! His image was now complete, and he had also gained the deadly power of the strange ring. Sexy Voord would be pleased with him, he thought, as he opened the door and strolled out of the dressing room toward the waiting stage, and the sound of applause...
Finis...
