Ah, shipping. Is there any act of fandom that is so derided by serious fanfolk? It's a shameful, disgraceful way to treat the characters, and so obviously non-canon.
It's also damn fun. There's something about the sheer rightness of the sheer wrongness involved. It's about as far from officialdom as you can get, but it adds a nice touch to the personal experience. Humans, always sineeg tginhgs taht anre't trhee. The insane portmanteaux just add to the experience.
So, who would you ship?
Barbara/Ian: is there any doubt to this couple? Even T. Davies says they married in Death of the Doctor, which makes it canon. For extra fun, consider Barbara/Altos and Barbara/random thal. Nero/Barbara, now that would just be cruel.
Vicki/Steven: yes, she's like ten years younger than he is, but she brings out his gentle side.
Ben/Polly: again, I think this one is practically canon.
Second Doctor/Jamie: now this one's definitely canon. They're so clingy together!
Yates/Benton: Does it even need saying? There's no account of Benton being gay, but I would be surprised if he weren't.
Harry/Sarah: I haven't actually seen them together in anything, but Harry must be shipped with someone and the "old girl"'ll do.
Romana II/Fourth Doctor: watch the punting scene in Shada and convince me otherwise. They even get a kid of sorts, in the form of Adric!
Tegan/Nyssa: still a better love story than Vastra/Jenny.
Sixth Doctor/Peri: well, maybe not. On one hand, they bicker a lot. On the other hand, I can't imagine them doing anything else together.
And that's it. Come to think of it, I wouldn't pair the Eighth, Tenth, or Eleventh Doctors with their respective romantic interests at all. Well, maybe Ten/Clara.
