Well, there's a thread title, isn't there? Now that I have your attention, my dear, dear ****ers (as the Cush would say), I ask you to consider this observation...
I do believe that despite every effort to halt the decline, it is clear to me that New Who is in it's dying days. Consider these points: it has dropped from being a big talked about-thing with spin off shows, etc. to being annual fodder for the schedules. Much as he is popular with some audiences, Capaldi hasn't really been the 'revelation' performance hoped for, and merchandising is still keenly pushing Tennant and Smith to keep the pennies coming in. GB, once a hive of postings all year round, is a dead zone as soon as the series has stopped airing. The programme just isn't generating high interest as it used to. There are tons of other franchises out there, and it found a niche among them, but that niche became a groove, then that groove became a rut, and that's where it has ended up.
I think that the chances of making a feature film are now low, even though Moffy is trying like fuck to re-engineer the show to be more and more US-friendly. We are going to end up with something nobody wants - UK audiences will see what a sell out it it, US audiences will not think it 'British enough' and both ways, the audiences will desert it, so it won't be seen as a srtong enough market property to invest in for feature, or similar, production.
It's dead, kids. Get used to it. What will probably happen is that it will be flogged on and on, like pigs do to the kindly horse in Animal Farm, and then it'll be turned on in rage and accused of failure and uselessness. In this sped up world, we have now gone through the equivalence of the 60s and 70s, and are now somewhere in the early 1980s, with the frankly dreadful mid to late 80s to come.
If you need any more of an analogy, how about this:
Old series 1963 - 19
Five Doctors (Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Baker T, Davison)
Two main Masters (Delgado, Ainley)
Two multi-Dr stories (3 drs, 5 Drs)
Two Davros stories
Main recurring monsters all introduced - daleks, cybermen, ice warriors, yeti/great intelligence, silurians, sontarans
Major companions, etc all introduced (UNIT, Sarah Jane, K9, plus many variations of the basic companion idea from Susan to Romana)
New series 2005 - 2015
Five Doctors (Eccleston, Tennant, Smith, Hurt, Capaldi)
Two main Masters (Simm, Gomez)
Two multi-Dr stories (Time Crash, Day of Dr)
Two Davros stories
Main recurring monster all(?) introduced - every one listed above, plus weeping angels, Judoon, Ood, Slitheen, picked up on zygons as a 'lost' monster
Major companions, etc all re-introduced or major/minor variants (Rose, Captain Jack, Donna, etc)
Let's face the truth for Christmas. Dr Who is dead again.
