The 4th Dr once did battle with the Tong of the Black Scorpion, but what if the Dr had previously done battle with another type of Tong(o), the Tongo Lizard?
The premise I have in mind is as follows:
The Dr and Jo are in the Sahara, being sent there by UNIT to entertain some NATO troops (singing, dancing etc. Much wolfwhistling by the troops as Jo acts as ‘the magician’s assistant’ etc) (perhaps they are also joined by a pop singer from the era, such as Alvin Stardust). Whilst there, mysterious creatures have been reported in the barracks nearby – soldiers have been killed, ripped to shreds. Eyewitnesses report “they were attacked by lizards! Giant lizards!”
The Dr investigates, driving over the sand dunes in a converted Bessie, seen here in a desert camouflage paint job. (in fact the Dr sports a camo velvet jacket for this story, and a large piece of camo netting instead of his usual cape. Jo wears a camo mini dress.) He meets giant lizard men – recognising them as being TOngo Lizards!
It transpires that an alien artefact landed in the desert recently and accelerated their evolution. Realising their strength over mankind (the Tongo lizard as is can absorb water through their feet, can tear armour with their super-sticky tongues, and have poisoned fangs and claws, so here they are a million times more dangerous and cunning) the Lizards decide to take over and rule the planet. Their leader is ostensibly peace-loving but a younger Tongo lizard presses for war.
The DR tries to make peace with them but at a crucial stage we hear from over the sand dunes the amplified sound of a pop concert being held for the troops – the sound of Alvin Stardust (etc) is painful to Tongo ears, who assume it to be a form of aural attack. A battle ensues. The Brig and Benton fly over in a helicopter (possible CSO footage) and fire mutated rattlesnakes from an air cannon (the rattlesnake is the Tongo lizard’s natural enemy). Eventually the Dr wins the day, after giving a moralising speech about the futility of war. He destroys the alien artefact at the root of all the problems (but not before we see a small scorpion glowing green... possible hint of a sequel).
Back at the barracks, Jo is amusingly mistaken for Lulu. End credits.
I think if enough people like this story idea and want it to be made canon, then it can achieve that privileged status. Here is how it may have looked:-
